Blog – From Social Care to Childcare, a volunteering journey

Leanne is qualified in adult Social Health Care and spent 20 years supporting adults in the community, helping them to maintain their independence and well-being.

After her daughter was born, and with no family to support her, she took a career break to become the primary carer.

Leanne described this experience as ‘wonderful’ and wondered if she could retrain as a Childcare Practitioner, bringing her skills in adult care and utilising them in the early learning and childcare sector.

When her daughter started part time in a local authority nursery she decided to volunteer at Fintry Mains Childcare & Community Hub.

“I loved working in adult care, but after my daughter was born I felt like I needed a change. I wanted to see early learning and childcare would be a good fit for me,” Leanne explained, “but I didn’t want to retrain without knowing for certain. I was also aware that I’d be more likely to get a job if I have some prior experience so I called up the Manager at Fintry Mains to see if there were any volunteering opportunities at the setting.”

Leanne has now been supporting our team 3 days a week, working in our 3-5 room where the Service Manager has described her as being a ‘real asset to the team’.

The team have guided her during the last 3 weeks, giving her tangible experience and helping her learn on the job. She has undertaken core training modules including child protection and infection control. Her support has given the rest of the team more time with planning and observations and has enhanced the quality of care in the room.

Reflecting on her experience so far Leanne said, “Children are like sponges, the first 7 years of their life are pivotal learning moments and I’m privileged to be a part of this. If you are looking for a bit of life experience, or perhaps a new career, I would absolutely recommend volunteering in a childcare setting – it’s a wonderful experience and the team here at Fintry have been fantastic.”

At FCSS we welcome all volunteers from bakers and craft makers, to potential childcare practitioners and board directors. Get in touch if you want to be part of the flexible childcare revolution.
