Preparing Early Learners with Peep

Peep groups are free, practitioner led sessions for parents and carers and their young children. They can be tailored for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and young school aged children.

Peep group sessions encourage families to support their children’s learning in the home environment, with an emphasis on keeping things simple and cost effective.

These sessions demonstrate to families that learning happens daily through everyday life routines, and by talking, singing, sharing books and playing together. The sessions are also a great way for families to socialise with one another and are a safe space for families to share concerns and ideas regarding parenting.

Our PEEP sessions at Tillydrone Nursery have been a great success.  They are hosted by Jasmin Connolly each month for the 2-5 age group, and they are open to all parents and children who attend our nursery. We have had high interest in the sessions and now see reoccurring faces for them! In the beginning, our PEEP sessions focused on literacy, supporting parents to help develop their children’s awareness of letters in their environment, expand their vocabulary, and encourage pre-writing skills.

According to Jasmin Connolly,

“One of my most memorable sessions was on storybook making, where children made their own storybooks alongside their family members, they shared their stories with one another and brought them home. We have now moved on from literacy and are beginning to explore numeracy.”

Everyday routines and activities are full of maths! By joining our Peep sessions parents can discover lots of opportunities to discuss numeracy in the family home, from mealtimes to bedtimes children and their families can explore numbers, counting, space, shapes, patterns, sorting and matching.

So far we’ve talked about Breakfast & OOSCs, alternative funding, childcare management software, flexible childcare single parent families & the Motherhood Penalty.
