Case Study – Supporting Families in Rural Communities

Jane lives in Keith, Moray and her son Brian attends Flexible Childcare Services Scotland’s Strathisla Children’s Centre in the town.

Jane’s mother passed when Brian was very young and Jane has little or no help from friends or family. With a full time job, and as the main bread winner, Jane needed to find a childcare provider that could support her busy schedule.

Initially Brian went to a local childminder but Jane decided to move him to Strathisla because the service offered flexible booking options and there were more children his own age.

According to Jane,

“I work full time and I have a 45 minute commute to work each morning and each evening. My days off are normally a Sunday and one week day but I never know what the week day is going to be until the rota is set at the end of the week. In most childcare settings this can be a problem and I would end up paying for a day of childcare when I was off. At Strathisla I can call the team and they can change the bookings so I can look after Brian when I’m off. This saves us quite a lot of money each week and without it I’d have to find another job.”
