Case Study – shifting the odds thanks to flexible childcare

Amy is a Social Support Worker with Dundee City Council. Due to the nature of her job her shift pattern varies wildly; from morning shifts to 24 hour sleep overs and everything in between. Her husband manages a restaurant in the city and also works long hours, often in the evenings.

They have 2 children who both attend Flexible Childcare Services Scotland’s Fintry Mains Childcare & Community Hub in Dundee.

They chose the nursery due to the flexible model which allows parents to book childcare by the hour and change their bookings regularly, ideal when both parents work varying shifts. The flexibility of the service has also helped them to save money on their childcare fees since they only pay for the hours they have booked.

Amy explains,

“The flexibility of the nursery has helped us so much as I can book my kids in a month in advance which works in great with my monthly rota and I only pay for when I use them. If we didn’t have the flexibility of this service I don’t think I would be able to afford another nursery and may not have been able to continue working.”

The nursery also has partnership with Dundee City Council which means they can offer funded childcare to eligible 2 year olds and all 3-5 year olds. Since Amy’s son is 3 he is entitled to approximately 30 hours of funded childcare each week.

“My son is in at least once a week now, if not more due to his funding, and he is thriving from being there more. Both my children started at Fintry nursery at 6 months old due to me having to go back to work and it’s been the best thing for them as the staff have been great with them and I trust them so much.”

Amy explains that her children enjoy the routine that the nursery provides and that both of her children’s development has accelerated since they started.

“I really recommend this nursery, the team are all so professional! They really care about the children; their needs are met all the time if not more and I see a difference in both of my children.  My oldest never used to talk much at nursery and now he non-stop chats and is comfortable with the team and his peers. My youngest is just starting to talk but she walks in her class confidently now whereas a year ago when she started she was a bit unsure but I can tell she loves being there with other kids her age!”
